A 15-year breeding program has helped the wētāpunga. This is a very large insect that comes from New Zealand. During the project, Butterfly Creek and Auckland Zoo bred the insects. These locations developed methods to raise them in large numbers. In total, the program raised 11,000 wētāpunga and released them into 10 new wild locations.
