NASA Captures Images of a Pileus Cloud

Scientists at NASA have captured images of a pileus cloud. This is a smooth cloud that looks like a cap. It formed above a fire cloud during a wildfire in Montana. The observation happened on August 11, 2026. A plane flew over the Sand Creek fire for the INSPYRE campaign. This project studies clouds made by big fires.
